Birth Defects Linked to Mother’s Use of Topamax
Topamax, also known as Topiramate, is a prescription drug manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals that has been on the market since 1995. Since then, it is believed to have been prescribed to more than 800,000 people.
Topamax is mostly known for the treatment of migraines, but is also used as an anticonvulsant. Research has revealed that pregnant women taking Topamax are at a higher risk of delivering a baby with several birth defects. The infant can suffer from a cleft lip and/or cleft palate. This problem occurs when parts of the lip or palate don’t completely fuse together.

FDA Has Reclassified Topamax Due to Injury Concerns
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had previously designated Topamax a Category C drug because of a “lack of human data.” The label stated that “there may be an association between the use of Topamax during pregnancy and congenital malformations.” The FDA is now in the process of moving Topamax to a Category D drug, meaning there is evidence of fetal risk, but the benefits of the drug may still outweigh the risks in certain situations. The new drug registry data shows that the risk of oral birth defects is up to 16 times higher among women who took Topamax or its generic equivalents during pregnancy.
