Holiday Hazards and How to Avoid Them

The holidays are often considered the best time of the year for many. But holiday cheer can sometimes mask certain hazards and risk of injuries. Some hazards during the holidays can be obvious while others are less obvious. With a little awareness and extra caution, many holiday hazards can be preventable and avoidable.

While everyone is getting into the Christmas spirit, holiday decorating is one of the primary ways to not only celebrate, but also expose yourself to injuries. Over one hundred Christmas decorating-related injuries are reported to occur by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) each day during the holidays. Nearly half of these reported decorating injuries involve falls or electrocutions. These incidents are often associated with improperly using ladders or faulty consumer products. Manufacturers can sometimes be held liable if their consumer products cause injuries from defects or electrical shocks from faulty equipment.

The CPSC often provides lists of recalled consumer products that may impose risks to safety and health from manufacturing defects or faulty equipment. By being aware of any recalled items and following product recommendations, you and others can avoid injuries caused by faulty or defective products while decorating this season.

Celebrating time with family and friends is another great way to enjoy the holidays. Unfortunately, holiday parties also increase exposure to potential hazards and injuries. When hosting or attending holiday events, be mindful of overindulgence in alcohol to avoid increased risks of falling and avoid increased risks of intoxicated drivers getting behind the wheel. The holiday season sees many drunk driving accidents often resulting in severe injuries and even death. Staying mindful of these potential hazards while enjoying the holidays will help keep you and your family safe.

If you or a loved one is injured from faulty equipment or a drunk driving accident during the holiday season, please contact an attorney at Abraham Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner by calling 713-222-7211 or toll free at 1 800-870-9584.
