More High-Powered Magnetic Toys Recalled Due to Dangerous Ingestion Hazard Leading to Serious Injuries and Multiple Deaths

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued yet another urgent recall involving magnetic toys that pose a serious ingestion hazard. On December 19, 2024, the CPSC announced a recall of hundreds of Magnetic Building Stick Sets manufactured by Elongdi. These toys, sold exclusively on Amazon between March and June 2024 for approximately $20, have been flagged as a significant safety hazard.

Like other high-powered magnetic toys, the recalled Magnetic Building Stick Sets violate mandatory federal regulation for magnet toys due to posing a dangerous choking hazard for young children. According to the recall, when high-powered magnets are swallowed, they can magnetize together or to another metal object, and become lodged in the digestive system. This can result in perforations, twisting or blockage of the intestines, and can lead to infections, blood poisoning, and even death.

Although no injuries have been specifically reported for this product, the statistics paint a troubling picture. The CPSC estimates that from 2017 through 2021, 2,400 cases of magnet ingestions were treated in hospital emergency departments, with 8 deaths reported between 2005 and 2021—including two outside of the United States. Consumers are strongly urged to stop using these recalled Magnetic Building Stick Sets immediately and keep them away from children.

This recall is only one of many that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued over the years due to the ongoing danger posed by high-powered magnetic toys. Unfortunately, companies like Elongdi continue to manufacture, market, and sell these dangerous products, while platforms like Amazon continue to allow their distribution. These recalls highlight the urgent need for greater accountability and stricter oversight to prevent future injuries and tragedies.
