Distracted driving is a problem across the United States. And laws restricting texting while driving and other forms of distracted driving are not eliminating the problem.

In 2017, a law went into effect banning drivers from texting while driving in Texas. Unfortunately, texting while driving – and other forms of distracted driving – remain a problem in our state.

Some areas are worse than others when it comes to distracted driving.

ValuePenguin, a popular personal finance website, recently ranked Texas counties in terms of prevalence of distracted driving-related accidents. Data from the Texas Department of Transportation was used.

The 5 Texas counties deemed the worst for distracted driving are:

  1. Bexar County (San Antonio area)
  2. Wichita County (Northern Texas county bordering Oklahoma)
  3. Ellis County (South of Dallas)
  4. Galveston County (Along Gulf of Mexico, southeast of Houston)
  5. Hays County (Southwest of Austin)

ValuePenguin also highlighted the safest counties in Texas for distracted driving. Among counties with a population of 75,000 or more, these were the 5 safest counties:

  1. Randall County (South of Amarillo)
  2. Cameron County (Southernmost county in Texas, including South Padre Island)
  3. Victoria County (Southeast of San Antonio, near Gulf of Mexico)
  4. Webb County (Including city of Laredo)
  5. Coryell County (West of Waco)

Distracted driving is especially problematic and common among the most inexperienced of drivers: Teenagers. More than 58 percent of car accidents among teen drivers are caused by distracted driving.
