Fatal Listeria Outbreak: Yu Shang Food Inc. Recall Highlights Food Safety Risks

In December 2024, Yu Shang Food Inc., a South Carolina-based company, expanded its recall of over 72,000 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products after a deadly Listeria monocytogenes outbreak. Tragically, the outbreak has resulted in two infant deaths and 19 illnesses across eight states, including California, Georgia, Illinois, and New York. Seventeen of those affected required hospitalization.

The recalled products include chicken feet, duck neck, beef shank, and pork hock, distributed nationwide to retailers and online customers. The contamination was first identified in October 2024 through routine USDA testing, which found Listeria in both the products and production facilities. Consumers are urged to check for products bearing establishment numbers “P-46684” or “EST. M46684” and discard or return them immediately.

Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacterium that poses significant risks to vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, newborns, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
