Portable Adult Bed Rails Recalled after Reported Deaths

A warning has been issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission about portable adult bed rails. The warning notes the bed rails are responsible for the suffocation deaths of 18 people since 2021. Approximately 220,000 adult portable bed rails have been recalled by Medical King due to entrapment and asphyxia risks. The recall is subsequent to the death of a 66-year-old man who became trapped between a mattress and a bed rail at a residential care facility.

The recall involves three models of Medical King Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights and one model of the Bed Assist Rail Without Legs. Online, the bed rails sold for around $40 on Amazon.com, eBay, Kohls.com, medicalkingusa.com and Target Plus from January 2020 through March 2024.

In the past three years, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued nine recalls. Between the recalls and two product warnings, more than 3 million units have been impacted and are associated with serious injuries from head, neck or chest entrapment, as well as 18 deaths. Data shows that 92% of fatalities associated with adult portable bed rails are from entrapment, usually of the head or neck.
