Tragic Crash Takes the Lives of Two Young Adults in River Oaks

Two young men lost their lives early Thursday morning, December 19, 2024, in a devastating car accident in Houston’s Upper Kirby neighborhood. The crash occurred just after 3 a.m. in the 2100 block of Kirby Drive near San Felipe Street, right next to River Oaks Elementary School.

The incident unfolded as a Harris County Precinct 1 deputy patrolling the area witnessed a speeding Lexus SUV northbound on Kirby Drive. Investigators reported that the vehicle lost control, hit a curb, flipped onto its roof, and collided with a tree.

Tragically, the driver and a backseat passenger—both men in their 20s—were pronounced dead at the scene. First responders had to cut into the wrecked vehicle to access the victims. The front passenger survived the crash and was transported to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

During the investigation, the surviving passenger revealed that the group had been returning from a party, and the driver had been drinking. While authorities are working to determine the driver’s exact level of intoxication and whether other factors contributed to the crash, it is clear that excessive speed played a significant role.

“They were definitely speeding down the road,” said Sgt. David Rose of the Houston Police Department. “This type of SUV and the way that it was sort of launched from the curb couldn’t have happened unless they were going significantly higher than the speed limit.”
