Major Crash on Southwest Freeway as Vehicle Plunges from HOV Lane

A devastating accident occurred on Tuesday, January 14, in the morning’s rush hour when a Jeep fell from an elevated HOV lane onto the main lanes of the Southwest Freeway at Beltway 8-West, resulting in multiple injuries.

According to METRO Police, the Jeep veered off the elevated HOV lane, crashing onto the main lanes below and scattering debris across the roadway. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle struck the T-Ramp walls at the HOV entrance ramp before launching into the freeway’s main lanes, ultimately impacting two other vehicles.

The occupants of the Jeep suffered life-threatening injuries and were rushed to the hospital, while the drivers of the two other vehicles involved appeared to have fortunately escaped without major injury. Houston Fire Department crews responded with extrication equipment to assist with an entrapment situation. The Texas Department of Transportation was also called to assess damage to the HOV lane barrier, which was visible in aerial footage from Air 11.
