Dangers of Golf Carts and Drinking

The danger of drinking and driving does not go away because the vehicle is a golf cart. Golf carts lack the restraint and safety features found in a vehicle, and coupled with excessive drinking, pose a risk to both the driver and the passengers.

A father recently filed a lawsuit over the death of his son, involving drunk driving and a golf cart. In the father’s lawsuit, it is alleged that the arm rest/hip restraint on his son’s seat of the golf cart broke off and led to him being ejected from the golf cart, causing him to strike his head on the ground and resulting in fatal injuries. A lack of restraint and safety features in golf carts, along with the possibility of a product defect, are contributing causes to incidents such as this one.

The father’s lawsuit also says that the blood-alcohol level of the driver of the golf cart was found to be over the legal limit. The country club where the driver of the golf cart was drinking prior to this incident is also a named defendant in the father’s lawsuit. Under the dram shop law in Texas, establishments that serve alcohol are held accountable for overserving patrons and for the patrons’ actions after the patron has left the establishment.
