Fisher-Price Recalls 2 Million Infant Swings After Five Deaths

Fisher-Price recently issued an urgent recall affecting over 2 million Snuga Swings across North America following reports of five infant deaths. The recall addresses suffocation hazards identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), particularly when the swings are used for sleep or with additional bedding materials. The recall specifically targets the headrest and body-support insert components, which have been identified as creating the suffocation risks.

The CPSC recommends that owners immediately cease using these swings for sleep purposes and take immediate action by cutting off the headrest and removing the body-support insert. While Fisher-Price is offering a $25 refund to consumers who complete these safety modifications, CPSC Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr. has heavily criticized the recall’s effectiveness, noting that the $25 refund represents only a fraction of the original $160 purchase price. The CPSC advised consumers to take the refund and remove the product from homes entirely because the product remains unsafe for infant sleep after the modifications.

The affected swings were sold at major retailers including Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us between October 2010 and January 2024, involving over 21 different models with various colors and toy accessories. This recall follows a pattern of safety issues with Fisher-Price infant products, including previous recalls of their Rock ‘n Play and Newborn-to-Toddler Rockers.
