On Saturday, August 31, 2024, a commercial passenger bus carrying 41 passengers and two drivers was traveling from Mississippi to Mexico. The bus was owned and/or operated by Autobuses Regiomontanos, which routinely transports passengers between Mexico and the United States. However, that Saturday the bus unexpectedly rolled over off a highway east of Vicksburg, Mississippi and ended up in a ditch.

According to officials investigating the scene, the cause of the tragic incident was a front left tire failure. The failure resulted in the bus veering onto an embankment and overturning onto its left side. Seven people were killed and a total of 37 passengers were taken to nearby hospitals. Among the people injured or killed in the incident, were siblings, ages 8 and 16, and the oldest passenger killed was 63 years old.

The investigation of this incident will include the assessment of the vehicle’s condition, tire condition, road condition, driver’s experience, and protection provided for the bus occupants.
