A Columbia-Brazoria Independent School District bus collided with a dump truck in Brazoria County around 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024. The crash, captured on dashcam footage, occurred on County Road 335 and Highway 36, with a road crew worker seemingly trying to flag traffic to stop. The bus was carrying 34 students, including Columbia High School junior Javier Nava, who described the terrifying moment when the bus swerved and crashed. Smoke filled the bus after the impact, prompting students to escape through the rear emergency exit. The collision left the bus driver and a female student seriously injured, requiring airlifting to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Other students were assessed and either released to their parents or sent back to school. One student, Natalee Stephenson, expressed relief that her sister, who was supposed to be on the bus, avoided the crash due to a last-minute change in plans. She also blamed nearby road construction for the accident, calling for better timing of such work to avoid risks during school hours.
