Two Dead and One Critical Injured After Major Airplane Crash in McKinney, Texas

On June 29, 2024, a 190 twin-engine Cessna 414A crashed in McKinney, Texas killing two people and critically injuring a third. City officials and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that the Cessna aircraft departed McKinney National Airport at 10:22 a.m. and appeared to have impacted the ground in an inverted position just seconds later, approximately one mile from the airport’s runway.

The pilot, M. Lewis, was described by his colleagues and loved ones as being an exceptional pilot with years of flight experience, who volunteered to fly nearly 150 non-profit missions transporting patients and medical necessities for free.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Cessna was owned by Hunger Relief Ministries, a non-profit organization in Forney working with food pantries.

Police officials stated that the crash is in the preliminary stages and has been transferred to federal agencies. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that investigators were on site the same day combing through the plane’s wreckage to find answers as to the cause of the crash.

According to the NTSB, the investigation will involve three primary areas: (1) the pilot, (2) the aircraft, and (3) the operating conditions, during which they will gather the information and records on flight track data, air traffic control communications, aircraft maintenance information, weather information, the pilot’s experience and background information, witness statements, available surveillance videos, and electronic devices that could contain information relevant to the investigation.

A preliminary report (also known as a probable cause finding) on the cause of the crash is expected to be released within 30 days. However, a final report normally takes 12 to 24 months.
