A somber cloud loomed over downtown Houston on the morning of Friday, May 31, 2024 as news broke of a devastating accident involving a METRO bus and a pedestrian. Damiola Matuluko, a dedicated city employee, lost her life as a METRO bus ran her over. Reports indicate that Matuluko was walking in the crosswalk with the right of way when a METRO bus turned left onto Rusk, striking her fatally.

According to METRO PD’s Lt. Tim McClelland, the bus, operated by First Transit, should have yielded to Matuluko, as she was walking in a crosswalk and was following an active walk signal, giving her the right of way.
This tragedy sheds light on broader safety concerns in downtown Houston, with data revealing a concerning trend of accidents, particularly during peak traffic hours. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, more than 20 crashes involving vehicles and pedestrians have been reported in downtown Houston so far this year.
