Around 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2024, a fatal collision occurred on the 18800 block of State Highway 99, which involved four individuals. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred when the driver of an 18-wheeler rear-ended a Ford F-350, which then struck the back of a forklift. As a result of the impact, the forklift driver and the passenger in the F-350 were transported to a local hospital. The driver of the F-350 died, resulting from their injuries sustained in the collision. According to the officers on scene, the driver of the 18-wheeler admitted to being distracted by their phone shortly before the fatal collision.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) defines distracted driving as any activity that takes your attention away from driving, such as texting and talking on a mobile phone; eating and drinking; adjusting the radio; and putting on makeup. A report by the TxDOT found that, in 2023, over 400 people were killed in collisions involving distracted driving. Moreover, the report noted that over 2,700 people were left seriously injured from collisions caused by distracted driving.
