Flame Jetting Hazard Leads to Recall of Fire Pits

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Colsen-branded fire pits, which are designed to hold fires by burning liquid alcohol, pose a “flame jetting” hazard. A recall of nearly 90,000 tabletop fire pits have been recalled due to the risk of serious burn injuries. Alcohol can spill or leak out of the pit during use, causing a flash fire. The flames can also be invisible. According to the recall notice, the flash fire can lead to injury; the recall warns that flame jetting can occur quickly and unexpectedly, potentially causing burns “in less than one second that can be serious and deadly.”

So far, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission noted it has received over 30 reports of flame jetting, which has resulted in 19 burn injuries. Two of those were third-degree burns on more than 40% of the victims’ bodies, and at least six incidents required surgery, prolonged medical treatment, loss of function, or permanent disfigurement.

When someone is injured or dies as a result of an accident, financial recovery may be available. Such recovery is particularly important when permanent, life-changing injuries are incurred. It is important to contact someone who understands the intricacies of the injured party’s right to recover.
