This year, Houston was fortunate to have hosted seven soccer World Cup games. This certainly brought more revenue and worldwide recognition to our beautiful city. Not surprisingly, attorney Benny Agosto, Jr. got a suite for each of these games, inviting many of his friends and family to cheer with him. But his connection to the game goes much deeper.

As managing partner of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner LLP, one of Texas’ oldest personal injury law firms, Agosto is very successful and well known in Houston and throughout Texas. Among many other accomplishments, he is past president of the Houston Bar Association and the National Hispanic Bar Association, as well as the current chair of the Houston Bar Foundation.

What many people do not know is that besides being an excellent lawyer, Agosto is also a soccer star. Born in New York and raised in Puerto Rico, he started playing soccer at age 14 for Wesleyan Academy, soccer club Remanso FC, and the U-19 Puerto Rico national team. At age 18, while in high school, he was invited to become a member of Houston Christian University’s soccer team. Not only did he excel as HCU’s soccer team’s goalkeeper but graduated in microbiology four years later. Soon after, Agosto took graduate studies at the University of Houston and then became a teacher and soccer coach for HCU. By 1991, he decided to excel even more by becoming a law student at South Texas College of Law Houston and then an attorney.

Many know about Agosto’s many accolades as an attorney. But he might be just as big of a soccer star. Indeed, in 2020, Agosto was inducted into the Puerto Rico Soccer Hall of Fame!

Every one of his four children has played soccer (and other sports), and he got to coach each of them at some point in their youth soccer career. Victoria, his youngest, made it to the Texas’ state final game during her U-12 season, and Benny was one of the coaches of her team.

Asked what he learned from his soccer career that helped him become a better lawyer, Agosto responded “I learned to always be prepared, work hard, and never give up. The skills learned in competition, directly translated into my dedication and hard work as a trial lawyer.”

Given his background, having the World Cup in Houston—the game that shaped him in the city he loves—meant a lot. Commenting before the first whistle, Agosto said “the United States celebrating its 250th anniversary during the World Cup is a great plus for all of us in Houston. The celebration will be incredible. Having soccer at the highest level played in Houston will also benefit our local soccer teams, including the Houston Dynamo and the Houston Dash. The more soccer people are aware of, the better it will be.”

When asked to reflect on his life and career, Agosto put it simply: “I am truly blessed. Thanks be to God.”

Hon. Josefina Rendón is a former district court judge in Houston. Born in Puerto Rico, she came to Texas at age 18 and has been a Texan ever since. She is a longtime member of The Houston Lawyer’s editorial board.
