Five Killed After High-Speed Car Crash in Central Texas

Around 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 a high-speed crash occurred on U.S. Highway 281, approximately six miles north of the city of Lampasas. Investigators say the crash occurred when the right tire of a 2004 Cadillac CTS, which was traveling south on U.S. 281, blew out, causing the vehicle to lose control and crossover into the northbound lanes of traffic. A Kia Telluride, traveling northbound, crashed into the passenger side of the Cadillac, causing a fiery collision and extensive damage to both vehicles.

Police officials identified the three occupants in the Kia as a mother and father driving their 17-year-old daughter to college in North Texas. The Cadillac also contained two occupants. All five occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. According to officials, a witness traveling 80 mph stated that the Cadillac had passed her vehicle and reported that the Cadillac might have been driving 100 mph. Investigators later confirmed that the Cadillac had old tires that needed to be replaced. However, investigators have not yet discovered whether alcohol was a factor in the deadly collision.
