Attorney Benny Agosto, Jr. Receives Ohtli Award for Exceptional Service and Commitment to Community

Houston, Texas (December 2024) — The law firm of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner is proud to announce that Managing Partner Benny Agosto, Jr. is the recipient of the annual Ohtli Award. This prestigious recognition celebrates Mr. Agosto’s dedication to the Mexican and Latino communities in the United States through his unwavering commitment to justice, diversity, and philanthropy.

Mr. Agosto received the Ohtli Award on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at the Gaylord National Harbor Resort in the Greater Washington DC area during the 2024 Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA)/Vision in Action (VIA) Annual Convention. The award is named after the Náhuatl word for “path,” symbolizing the path that leaders like Mr. Agosto create for future generations. The Institute of Mexicans Living Abroad, part of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, selects an outstanding HNBA leader to receive this award each year.

Mr. Agosto is recognized as a leader in the legal community and an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. He is a former President of both the Houston Bar Association and the Hispanic National Bar Association, and he is the President and Founder of the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas Foundation, which has raised more than $550,000 in scholarships for Hispanic students attending the three Houston-area law schools. In 2021, Mr. Agosto and his wife, Nikki Agosto, donated $4 million to his alma mater, South Texas College of Law Houston, to establish The Agosto Justice Center for Leadership and Empowerment, dedicated to expanding diversity in legal education. Earlier this year, Mr. and Mrs. Agosto donated $1 million to the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation, benefiting the Emerging Leaders Institute and positively impacting the lives of young Latinos living in Houston for generations to come.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the community, Mr. Agosto has received numerous awards, including the Juneteenth Ally Award from the Center for the Healing of Racism, the President’s Award from the Houston Bar Association (three-time recipient), the Distinguished Lawyer Alumni Award from South Texas College of Law Houston, the Spirit of Excellence Award from Houston Christian University, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hispanic Issues Section of the State Bar of Texas. Additionally, he has been honored as the namesake of the Houston Bar Association LGBTQ+ Committee’s Benny Agosto, Jr. Pride Award, also known as “The Benny.”
