83-year-old Joyce Blankenship died when a wildfire enveloped her neighborhood in the town of Stinnett, Texas, located northeast of Amarillo. The fire burned for nearly 3 weeks and was the largest and most destructive in the recorded history of Texas, burning more than 1 million acres, dozens of homes, and thousands of livestock.

According to officials, it is believed that the fire was started by powerlines. One utility company, Xcel Energy, admitted that some of their equipment may have played a role.

Joyce Blankenship’s son, Paul Blankenship, filed a lawsuit naming Xcel Energy, Southwestern Public Service and Osmose Utilities as defendants. The lawsuit alleges the fire started when a faulty wooden utility pole snapped, allowing the powers line to make contact with the ground. Thus, the fire was entirely preventable.
