In July of 2024, BMW of North America issued a recall of approximately 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to defective airbag inflators that could potentially cause severe or deadly injuries. The subject vehicles’ steering wheels are equipped with airbag inflators manufactured by Japanese automotive parts company Takata Corporation that could possibly explode. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that the potential explosion could propel sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants in the vehicle, resulting in serious injury or death.
This July 2024 recall is the latest to emerge from a massive chain of ongoing Takata airbag recalls, which NHTSA called “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.” Approximately 67 million driver’s side and/or passenger’s side Takata airbags from more than 42 million vehicles in the U.S. made by 19 different automakers (34 different auto brands) have been recalled. Since 2009, more than 30 deaths, including at least 26 in the U.S., and hundreds of injuries have been attributed to Takata airbags. Amongst the deaths in the U.S., NHTSA reported that one was from a BMW crash.
According to BMW’s last report, it is not aware of any crashes or injuries linked to the new July 2024 recall. This latest recall includes certain BMW 3 Series Sedans and Sportswagon models from 2006 to 2012 model years. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on August 23, 2024. Moreover, BMW has stated that BMW dealers will inspect and replace the driver’s airbag module for free.
