Around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2024, a fatal boating incident occurred in Lake Conroe, Texas, involving individuals boating while intoxicated. Investigators report that two individuals were operating their boats while intoxicated and collided, which caused a passenger in one of the boats to fall overboard and drown. Despite efforts to rescue the fallen passenger, the Texas Game Wardens and recovery divers located the body and pronounced her dead at the scene. The two individuals operating the boats were charged with boating while intoxicated, but investigation for more details surrounding the incident remains ongoing.
During the Fourth of July weekend, Texas Wardens responded to over twenty boating accidents, five fatal boating incidents, and several open water rescues, according to a news release from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Two deaths occurred in the Gulf of Mexico near Galveston, two at Lake Ray Hubbard, and one at Lake Conroe. Wardens reported approximately 32 incidents related to boating while intoxicated during this holiday weekend, which is a significant decrease from the reported fifty-six incidents in 2023. Texas Game Wardens attribute this decrease in part to their participation in Operation Dry Water, which promotes boating and water safety practices to prevent boating under the influence.
