Grocery Chain Sued After Anti-Theft Policies End in Fatal Shooting

A lawsuit has been filed against 99 Ranch Market, a popular Asian Grocery Store Chain, following the death of Joseph Sun, an employee who was killed while trying to stop thieves from stealing a company owned golf cart.

The suit was filed on December 12, 2024, in the 129th Harris County District Court by Sophia Sun on behalf of Joseph’s estate. According to the lawsuit, 99 Ranch Mart is one of the largest Asian grocery stores and boasts of fifty-four stores across ten different states. The store allegedly created policies for their employees to prevent theft while on the job. One of which, allegedly included instructing employees to carry pepper spray to ward off shoplifters. On October 1, Sun confronted two men attempting theft of a 99 Ranch Market golf cart. Sun allegedly followed the company policy and confronted the thieves. A struggle ensued that ended in Joseph Sun being fatally shot. The lawsuit seeks relief of over $1,000,000 and accuses the store of negligence and gross negligence, claiming their anti-theft policy put employees like Joseph Sun in danger.
