Impaired Driver Causes Deadly Chain-Reaction Crash in West Houston

A deadly multi-vehicle collision occurred on January 8, 2025, just before 2:30 am. The collision occurred on the Southbound 59 Freeway over Shepherd Drive in Houston, Texas. According to authorities, the chain-reaction collision began when a driver, who showed signs of impairment, collided into a barrier. After colliding into the barrier, the impaired driver attempted to flee the scene and jumped off the freeway, where he was found unresponsive and in serious condition.

The impaired driver’s disabled vehicle remained on the freeway and a second vehicle collided into it, trapping two occupants inside. Officials report these two individuals are expected to make a recovery. Unfortunately, a third vehicle then crashed into the second car, killing the driver of the third vehicle. The freeway was shut down for several hours while officials worked to clean up the wreckage and investigate the collisions.

Impaired or intoxicated drivers are one of the leading causes of motor vehicle fatalities in Texas. Often times, these intoxicated drivers get behind the wheel after frequenting a bar or restaurant where they have been overserved. Under the Texas Dram Shop Act, victims of drunk driving can pursue legal action not only against the drunk driver, but also the establishment that over-served the drunk driver.
